Which Carriers Are Licensed in Florida

Florida licenses 27 auto insurance carriers to write policies in the state, but not all of them write every product. Some carriers write only standard-tier policies for drivers with clean records. Others specialize in non-standard coverage for drivers with violations, suspended licenses, or DUI convictions. A few write both.

The distinction matters when you need a specific product: FR-44 filing after a DUI, SR-22 for reinstatement after a financial-responsibility suspension, or non-owner coverage when you do not own a vehicle. A carrier licensed in Florida can still decline to write the product you need. The roster below shows which carriers write which products, based on their published product lines and state filings.

Florida Licensed Auto Insurers

27 carriers

Florida licenses 27 auto insurance carriers to write policies in the state. Eleven of those carriers write FR-44 policies with the elevated $100,000/$300,000/$50,000 limits required after DUI conviction.

FR-44 Filing Requirement After DUI

Florida requires FR-44 filing for three years after a DUI conviction under Florida Statute 316.193 for offenses on or after October 1, 2007. The FR-44 is proof you carry elevated liability limits: $100,000 per person, $300,000 per accident for bodily injury, and $50,000 for property damage. Those limits are higher than the state's standard $10,000 property damage minimum.

Not every carrier writes FR-44 policies. Some standard-tier carriers decline FR-44 business entirely. Others write it but require you to move to a non-standard subsidiary. If your current carrier does not write FR-44, you must switch carriers to meet the filing requirement. The state does not allow you to drive without the FR-44 certificate on file during the three-year period.

Eleven carriers in Florida write FR-44 policies and file electronically with the state: Acceptance Insurance, Allstate, Bristol West, Clearcover, Dairyland, Geico, Infinity, Kemper, National General, Progressive, and The General. State Farm and USAA write FR-44 but their filing method is not confirmed electronic. Farmers, Liberty Mutual, and Nationwide write SR-22 but do not write FR-44.

If your current carrier does not write FR-44, you must switch carriers before your conviction date triggers the filing requirement. The state does not grant a grace period.

Carrier Roster by Product Line

The table below shows which carriers write FR-44, SR-22, non-owner policies, and post-DUI coverage in Florida. Tier indicates the carrier's primary market: preferred tier serves drivers with clean records, standard tier serves most drivers, and non-standard tier specializes in high-risk coverage.

Preferred-tier carriers typically decline FR-44 and non-owner business. Standard-tier carriers write some high-risk products but often move those policies to a non-standard subsidiary. Non-standard carriers specialize in SR-22, FR-44, and post-violation coverage and quote those products directly. If you need FR-44 or non-owner coverage, start with non-standard carriers: Acceptance, Bristol West, Dairyland, Direct Auto, GAINSCO, Infinity, Kemper, and The General.

Some carriers write SR-22 but not FR-44. Farmers, Liberty Mutual, Mercury General, and Root write SR-22 for financial-responsibility reinstatement but do not write the elevated FR-44 limits required after DUI. If you have a DUI conviction, confirm the carrier writes FR-44 before you request a quote. An SR-22-only carrier cannot meet your filing requirement.

Standard Minimum Coverage in Florida

Florida does not require bodily injury liability for in-state drivers who do not have a DUI or financial-responsibility suspension. The state requires $10,000 property damage liability and personal injury protection coverage. Uninsured motorist coverage is not required. That structure is unusual: most states require bodily injury liability as the primary coverage.

FR-44 filers must carry bodily injury liability at the elevated $100,000/$300,000 limits in addition to the $50,000 property damage minimum. SR-22 filers must carry the state's standard minimums but are not required to carry bodily injury liability unless the suspension order specifies it. Verify your reinstatement letter to confirm which limits apply to your filing.

Personal injury protection covers your own medical expenses and lost wages after an accident, regardless of fault. The minimum PIP limit is $10,000. PIP does not cover the other driver's injuries: that is what bodily injury liability covers. If you carry only the state minimum and cause an accident that injures another driver, you pay out of pocket for their medical bills unless you add bodily injury coverage.

Florida Uninsured Motorist Rate

20.6%

One in five Florida drivers is uninsured. Uninsured motorist coverage is optional in Florida, but it protects you when an at-fault driver has no insurance. Without it, you rely on your own collision and PIP coverage or sue the at-fault driver directly.

Multi-Car Policies and Household Coverage

Most carriers offer a multi-car discount when you insure two or more vehicles on the same policy. The discount applies to the total premium, not to each vehicle individually. The vehicles must be garaged at the same address and titled to household members listed on the policy. A vehicle titled to someone outside the household typically does not qualify for the same-policy discount.

Adding a vehicle mid-term re-rates the entire policy rather than simply adding a flat amount. The carrier recalculates the premium for all vehicles based on the new vehicle's make, model, year, and the drivers assigned to it. If the new vehicle is a high-value car or a sports car, the total premium can increase more than you expect. Request a quote before you buy the vehicle so you know the new premium before you commit.

Compare Carriers for Your Household

Rates vary by carrier, vehicle, driver age, location, and coverage selections. A carrier that offers the lowest rate for one household may not offer the lowest rate for another. The only way to know which carrier offers the best rate for your specific household is to compare quotes from multiple carriers that write your product line. If you need FR-44 filing, request quotes only from carriers that write FR-44 in Florida. If you need multi-car coverage, confirm the carrier writes the multi-car discount for your vehicle count and household structure. Compare at least three carriers before you choose.
